Rumour is Cooking up to be Amazing!
Update: ** Rumour is now open! Make sure you check it out!**
The rumor in town is Rumour will be opening soon and I am pretty darn excited for this new restaurant to officially open its doors here in Missoula, MT. I have been eagerly watching the progression of this epicurean endeavor on social media for the past year, so I was thrilled when my family was recently invited to try a limited menu and check out their new digs. Now I am even more excited for their grand opening scheduled for May 10th, 2016.
Chic Décor
Rumour is now occupying the space where the iconic Elbow Room was located on Stephens Ave., and it has been completely remodeled into a very comfortable and welcoming urban-western chic style restaurant. The exterior of the building features rough hewn timber boards, accented with local rock and corrugated metal siding, which allows a lovely balance of texture and depth, and a strong presence from the street.
Walking inside, I knew immediately a lot of thought and care went into all of the details. The restaurant is divided into several spaces so to accommodate intimate parties, larger gatherings and general patron seating. The cohesive use of various materials such as rich yet supple leather, oversized contemporary chairs, reclaimed barn wood and sturdy accessories pull everything together into a warm and inviting environment. The stamped concrete floor adds additional flavor to the overall ambience of the interior. What I found quite unique is each space has its own special touches and attributes reflecting special family members such as a hand blown glass chandelier in room 920; which is a nod to one of the owner’s mother. Finally, I can’t leave out the patio which promises to be a great space to hang out in a more informal environment. Attention to detail can be found outside as well and once the weather warms up a bit will be a perfect place to relax.

Although Rumour is a restaurant, I am predicting the bar will be the hub of buzzing activity and was quite lively the night we visited. With seating for approximately 10 people on luxurious high-backed custom leather chairs, there will be a full bar serving up everything from local craft beer, large variety of wines to specialty cocktails.
Delicious, locally grown ingredients
Now for the heart of Rumour: the food. The owners, John and Colleen Powers, vow to use local ingredients as much as possible; everything from fresh locally grown organic vegetables to grass-fed Montana beef which is free of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and herbicides. This way you know you are only consuming high quality food. The contemporary menu promises to be impressive and will offer a variety of creative epicurean delights from pizzas with duck and fig, to roasted salmon with an apricot Dijon glaze. Included are vegetarian and gluten-free options as well. The children’s menu also offers a healthy selection of entrees that will appeal to the youngest and pickiest of eaters.
Since I am a vegetarian, I had the seasonal soup which was a thai basil pea and paired it with a pasta primavera . The soup was so delicious and had the right balance of flavors. I was worried the peas would overpower the other ingredients, but fortunately they only offered a hint of flavor. The pasta primavera was definitely one of the best I have had and I could tell immediately the grilled vegetables were fresh. Again, it was the perfect combination of complimentary ingredients. My wife loves a good steak so she ordered the Rib Eye with mashed potatoes and just raved about its perfection! Overall our dining experience top-quality and immensely enjoyable.
No tipping, please
One last unique feature of Rumour will be to continue the growing trend of ‘Hospitality Included’ which means there is a no tipping policy. Rather, all employees will participate in a revenue share program, where everyone will share in the success of the restaurant. Employees will be compensated more equitably, competitively and professionally. I find this to be an interesting trend and can see how it benefits all. Tipping just the servers does not take into account all of the other people behind the scene that work just as hard. It’s obvious that John and Colleen are thoughtful and attentive owners with a strong motivation to provide an excellent workplace.
Overall, I can’t wait to the official opening. I was so impressed with the décor, the employees and especially the food that I sincerely have no trouble recommending this restaurant to anyone wishing a meal that is well-priced yet high-quality.
